Recently, there has been a story on news channels and social networks about a woman who lives in Gilbertsville, KY. She sought saline breast implants in 1992 at the age of 20 years old.

After many years, she found out her implants had molded and caused her years of anguish from illnesses that no one understand their causes.

It wasn’t until she saw a woman on TV that had the same symptoms that she wondered if she was suffering from the same thing. Sure enough, she was and she underwent an explant to remove the breasts.

Paula’s Unfortunate Story

Paula Blade’s story is such an unfortunate one. Her experience with breast implants is not typical. When she was consulted a surgeon about them, she was told they would last her a lifetime. The surgeon said if they ruptured it wouldn’t be a big deal. The implants at that time had a valve that could be filled with saline if it was ever needed.

It was only two years after surgery that she decided to go back to have her breasts repaired because they didn’t look right under her skin. She says they looked wavy.

After the second surgery, she thought she was finished caring for her chest. However, several years later she started to get sick.

She had chronic sinusitis, bronchitis, and many different infections. She even had sores all over the top part of her body. What’s worse is they wouldn’t heal. Paula became sicker and sicker, and still the doctors couldn’t understand what was happening. She got to a point where she thought she was just going to die.

Luckily, she saw the Monsters Inside Me show and met with Dr. Susan Kolb who diagnosed her with saline biotoxin illness. Since many doctors aren’t familiar with the disease, they aren’t able to diagnosis it. The solution was remove the breast implants. A process that took hours since scar tissue also had to be removed.

Now, Paula is living life with health on her side. She is relieved she no longer lives with a mysterious illness that was killing her.

She spends much of her time educating people about her experience. It’s important for people to know that implants do not last a lifetime. Older implants should have been replaced after about 8-10 years. If Paula had them replaced at 8 years, her health problems probably wouldn’t have occurred.
